Prompted by a day in which I realized at 10 p.m. that the only thing I'd had to drink all day was a single cup of coffee, I'm experimenting with drinking at least 64 ounces of water a day. As I was starting this challenge, I learned there isn't any real scientific evidence that demands one drink 8 cups of water day. This article from the Mayo Clinic notes that various studies have produced conflicting recommendations, but it suggests somewhere in the range of 9 cups of fluid for a woman living in a temperate climate. We get a fair amount of fluid from our food, of course, in things like soup and fruit. Here is a more in-depth literature review from the National Institutes of Health. It's interesting that one study mentioned in the review found that greater water intake was associated with decreased headache severity and duration.
I'm also learning about a different visual artist each day. I have a pretty poor long-term memory for names of people, especially ones I've never met in real life. Their ideas, actions, and products are simply more sticky than their handles. In college, I took several art history classes, but now I have difficulty recalling exactly which artists we studied. I do remember some of the works of art (but not their titles either), so I'll end up with Google searches like: table feminist art triangle Of course, Google knows I'm looking for The Dinner Party by Judy Chicago. Another one of my actual searches: Spanish painting firing squad yellow Why, yes, The Third of May 1808 by Francisco Goya, that's what I meant. You know, this could be a fun Jeopardy! category concept. "I'll take 'Art and artists by keywords' for $400, Alex." "Shell naked woman Renaissance " "What is the Birth of Venus by Botticelli?" On second thought, this concept might be a bit too imprecise given that there could be other obscure yet substantially similar works, and anyway, we already have that internet gem known as Yahoo Answers. |
