Robert M. Lamp House (exterior only)
You could travel up and down Butler Street a hundred times without noticing the narrow driveway that leads to the privately owned Lamp House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The building is uniquely situated in the middle of the block.
There's been a recent controversy regarding whether the upper floor's view of Lake Mendota should be preserved. Interestingly, the house's owner took the position that it should not. He's a local developer and landlord so he clearly has some opposing loyalties.
Given that the Lamp House is already pretty much completely surrounded by other structures, this debate about a far-off lake view seems kind of shrug-worthy. I'd be more concerned with the character of the houses that would be demolished to make room for any apartment buildings.
Little Free Library on Lucia Crest
This little free library is extra adorbs as its exterior matches that of the accompanying house. The High School Musical novel tie-in was quite tempting but I somehow found the strength to resist.
Babe's Madison
Sports bar for a co-worker's get-together.
Canonball Path bicycle bridge
New bridge over the beltline highway. Much nicer than the two bridges that span the highway several miles to the east and west.
Madison Nail Supplies (closed) + nearby construction site
Throughout this month, I had been going to places in my wheelhouse -- parks, historical sites, libraries. It was time to go somewhere I probably would never visit otherwise. I had often wondered how a niche retail establishment like Madison Nail Supplies is able to stay in business. Answer: it doesn't.
So I wandered around the edges of a construction site up the road. And with that, I completed my 30 new locations in 30 days. This has been my favorite challenge so far.
